Optical zoom works by physically adjusting a camera's lens elements to magnify the image, allowing you to "zoom in" on a subject without losing image quality. Unlike digital zoom, which simply enlarges pixels, optical zoom uses the lens to alter the focal length, which changes the field of view and increases image detail.
Here’s a breakdown of how it functions:
1. **Lens Movement and Focal Length**: When you zoom in optically, lens elements inside the camera move to change the focal length—the distance between the lens and the camera sensor. A longer focal length narrows the field of view, effectively magnifying distant objects.
